That figure is the number of hits this blog received yesterday.

5,492.

It is a load of old b#llocks.

On a good day I might have 500 that come and take a peek at my modest wares. It’s normally between 350-450. But not 5,492.

A bit of detective work suggests a lot of visitors from the USA and Philippines, via a whole raft of dodgy sounding entry sources, although strangely enough also from some of my linked blogs. It is all down to bots making hits to big up other sites, to fool analytics into creating back links to the offending sites, all fake news, all a part of our crazy digital world that I am fast realising is broken.

As an antidote, let’s have a picture to sooth our fevered brows...

"See that bloke's ice cream over there? Reckon we could fly over and nick it?"

You prompted me to have a look, same anomally with 4271 pageviews mostly from the States and the Philippines. Though I didn't get any spurious nonsense comments!

Steve - I once had 18,000 hits, from India - not a single comment, in an hour - these spam-bots are weird entities and completely beyond my understanding. The stats generated are great for the ego, but mean jack shit when taken in this context. Take care - Dyl

Digital world broken?

Well, there's a level of disruption caused by the dangers of instant mass communication aligned with the natural impulses of people - hence twitter and facebook.
It's a completely unnatural entity.

So broken! it shouldn't even exist to start with.

In November 2005 I purchased a pair of Swarovski 10x42 EL binoculars from The London Camera Exchange shop in Guildford, for the then princely sum of £899. These bins have served me well, with almost daily use in all types of weather, testing their durability to the maximum - salt water spray, deluges of rain, 38C temperatures, dust, dirt, slight knocks... and apart from the armour coating that had started to bubble and come away from the body, nothing to be alarmed about. Then, in the summer of 2022, I noticed that I had a problem when close focusing - the outer focusing wheel would lose grip and it would take me an age to regain a middle-ground distance of focus - plus, over the next few weeks this outer focusing wheel became loose. A special day

In birding, timing can mean the difference between an average day in the field and that of a spectacular one. Good timing can be helped by reading the weather conditions correctly, or understanding local conditions but it is more often down to pure luck. In this case, I just got lucky... I had not visited Dungeness since March 2022, quite a gap for me. It was high time that I once more trod the shingle and my timing of a visit was down to several factors, mostly a personal liking for mid-late autumn but also because I needed to be at home until September 20th and could not make the journey south until then. I also chose to stay at the bird observatory for a few days rather than make it a day trip.
