We have lost so much, and without a greater number of guardians in the years to come, will lose even more. To suggest that children have no place on reserves is absurd... I hope the comment was made in jest!Steve Galehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09459545933323958452noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8802206289996500659.post-5667650813126871982015-07-31T16:09:08.898+01:002015-07-31T16:09:08.898+01:00Well done to Lucy and her Trust, children are vita...Well done to Lucy and her Trust, children are vital to carry on the interest in the countryside into the future. Such schools have just started here in Kent and on Sheppey, perhaps the pratt who made the comment might like to reconsider his views.Derek Faulknerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05140363868104172311noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8802206289996500659.post-51735563510056498512015-07-31T15:47:55.256+01:002015-07-31T15:47:55.256+01:00I feel the same, from the outside, about bird race...I feel the same, from the outside, about bird races and year ticks and league tables, rendering a vibrant ball of feathers into a wingdings symbol on a chart.Simon Douglas Thompsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16331409652996600049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8802206289996500659.post-80468604023187872482015-07-31T09:38:56.769+01:002015-07-31T09:38:56.769+01:00It sounds like you’ve arrived at a good place, Ste...It sounds like you’ve arrived at a good place, Steve. Long may it last! If only you could bottle that capacity to enjoy the simple, easily accessible pleasures of the avian world and you’d be a rich man!

One comment in response to Derek’s, which I hope will offer some encouragement. The land management Trust I’m involved with runs what’s called “Forest Schools”. At its heart it’s all about getting kids out into the natural world (http://www.forestschoolassociation.org/what-is-forest-school/). I’m sure they’re run all over the country and certainly give me some hope for the future.Lucy @ A Natural Interludehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10239907920826512177noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8802206289996500659.post-2152721602747671572015-07-31T05:40:02.639+01:002015-07-31T05:40:02.639+01:00Well said Steve and I think it is the word "c...Well said Steve and I think it is the word "competition" that has ruined many aspects of wildlife watching, especially birdwatching but now it seems, odoranta. Why people can't get simple pleasure from birdwatching, as you suggest, is beyond me, rather than grabbing for the pager two seconds after they've seen a rare species and announcing it to the world asp., so that they can get the credits for finding it.
Also as you suggest, the youngsters are largely missing, technology seems to have lured them away from wandering around in the countryside doing simple things such as birdwatching. Perhaps the elitist attitude of many modern birdwatchers also deters some youngsters from getting involved. One well known local blogger, said to me recently that children should never be allowed near nature reserves!Derek Faulknerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05140363868104172311noreply@blogger.com
