Warm blue


Northern France, last spring. A Bluethroat sings from the top reaches of a bush on the edge of a marsh. I forgot that I had taken this photograph until looking through a whole raft of images today. Regardless of the distance of the bird, and its lack of detail, I was at once warmed by the visual, so thought I would share it.

Beautiful! Sometimes, just like the artist Chris Rose's paintings, it's nicer to have the bird as a small piece of the whole picture rather than just a great big specimen shot bang right in the middle....if that makes sense? I've yet to see a Bluethroat but live in hope every spring when I'm on the coast.

We have three medium-sized Lavender bushes in our back garden. Throughout the summer the flowers (which last for several months) are a magnet for insects and give off a most restful aroma. A special day

In birding, timing can mean the difference between an average day in the field and that of a spectacular one. Good timing can be helped by reading the weather conditions correctly, or understanding local conditions but it is more often down to pure luck. In this case, I just got lucky... I had not visited Dungeness since March 2022, quite a gap for me. It was high time that I once more trod the shingle and my timing of a visit was down to several factors, mostly a personal liking for mid-late autumn but also because I needed to be at home until September 20th and could not make the journey south until then. I also chose to stay at the bird observatory for a few days rather than make it a day trip. Legacy

LEGACY: the long-lasting impact of your actions on others... I will soon reach a significant age, one that will allow me to claim a state pension and a free bus pass. Apart from greyer hair and a narrower band of hearing range it has also brought with it a certain amount of navel gazing: what did I do to get to where I am today, what have I done with that time and what - if anything - will I leave behind after I have gone? They are thoughts that are not unusual as we grow older. The answer to such questions are easier and more obvious if we have a family - any surviving partner, child or sibling will have their own memories of you that one hopes will be positive, that there will be some elements of your life that has informed them, touched them or even warned them off from replicating.
