#BWKM0 ND&B garden challenge
DAY 27
How well did we know the status of the birds that visited our gardens before the 'lockdown' started? Well, in my case not well at all. I have recorded seven firsts since March 20th, and some of those have now been multiple - Greylag Goose (twice), Brent Goose (twice), Gadwall, Teal (three times), Common Scoter (twice), Merlin and Coot. Note that they are all non-passerines. I have struggled to record Black-headed and Common Gull - just ONE of each, whereas I'd have wagered on them being of daily occurrence. My single Goldcrest and Long-tailed Tit has me scratching my head as to why they have been so scarce. My totals of 119 Common Buzzard and 24 Red Kites most pleasing and higher than I would have thought. I could have told you that I would observe a dribble of Chaffinches passing overhead during March, but not the 100-300 daily processions that I witnessed. Of course, this might be an abnormal year, and if I were to repeat this exercise next March and April I'd be knee deep in Goldcrests and wondering where all the Buzzards had gone.
OUR COMBINED TOTAL (BRITISH ISLES GARDENS) IS 158 SPECIES Still to be recorded are: Pochard, Tufted Duck, Dunlin, Bar-tailed Godwit, Common Sandpiper, any skua, Common Tern, Arctic Tern, Razorbill, Swift, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Kingfisher, Common Redstart, Whinchat, Lesser Whitethroat, Garden Warbler.
Our oversea's gardens (New Zealand and Albania) add an additional 15 SPECIES
Today’s additions are: Long-eared Owl (Sam B)
