A ray of hope?


The Langley Vale Wood / Langley Vale Farm situation has been getting quite a bit of air on Facebook and Twitter - a few botanists have picked up on the concern over the arable plants present and have been asking the Woodland Trust for clarification via the twitter account @langleyvalefarm

I asked the following questions (and made the following statements) to this very account:

"My concern about the arable plants is they will not be specifically managed. Without this they will disappear!"

 "The Woodland Trust know what is present and how to care for them. Please ensure that they do. Very rare plants here."

They did reply - and if these statements are exactly what will happen, then we can sleep soundly in our beds at night...

ALL AREAS OF ARABLE WEEDS WILL BE MANAGED APPROPRIATELY - WT ARE TALKING TO OPEN SPACE CHARITIES ABOUT PROPER MANAGEMENT

NOTHING WILL BE LOST - AND HOPEFULLY THESE PLANTS WILL FLOURISH

So, two very clear promises here. let's just hope that everything will be carried out in time, because the clock has been ticking for too long already.

Well done Steve and Peter, I hope it calms down now and the WT honour their promise. There is no reason why it can't become an arable reserve to rival Ranscombe Farm. Best of luck.

Mike Netherwood

I first met Mike Netherwood at Beddington Sewage Farm in early 1975, me being an ultra-keen and ultra-green 16-year old birder, he some 20 years my senior. Mike, together with Ken Parsley, were the remnants of a once much larger ringing group which carried out the trapping and ringing of birds across the open expanse of the sewage farm. Whenever I bumped into them, which I often did, they would both tolerate my many questions about what they had seen and trapped and listen to me waxing lyrical about my own observations. To tell it like it is, or not...

I am grateful to Gavin Haig (Not Quite Scilly) who drew my attention to an opinion piece, penned by Matt Phelps, which appeared in the November issue of 'Birdwatch' magazine, entitled 'Positive Approach', which I have now read. In it, he suggests that there is too much negativity being posted on social media regarding the state of our birding world, which is then acting as a deterrent towards a younger generation in adopting conservation and wildlife study. He also suggests that a lot of this negativity is being generated by older birders, and that these old timers keep banging on about the 'good old days' which isn't helpful in encouraging the youth to pick up a pair of binoculars and get out into the field.
